Ten Ways to Get in the Christmas Spirit

10 ways to get ready for christmas

Everyone has their own thoughts on when to start celebrating Christmas. Most, start thinking about Christmas the day after Thanksgiving when Black Friday begins the holiday shopping season.  For me, Christmas sort of creeps up on me when orders begin appearing in my inbox. Generally, that is around Halloween. That's crazy early, I know. But when I see Christmas decorations start appearing in retail stores, it sort of makes sense why I start receiving orders in October.  Here's what I do to "Get in the Christmas spirit".

Make a list of things to do to get ready for Christmas

This is a big one for me, because I'm all about making lists. Have a couple of lists going like your shopping list, card list, menu list, decorations needed list and fun things you want to do this Christmas list.  Keeping lists will help you stay organized and manage the holiday craziness.

Listen to Christmas music or watch a Christmas movie

There is one thing that I look forward to at Christmastime and that's listening to Christmas music and watching a classic Christmas movie. I usually don't start listening to the music until after Thanksgiving, because before long you will get sick of it. But, the classic Christmas movies I never get tired of. Some make me laugh and a must watch at Christmastime, like "Elf" with Will Ferrell and "Christmas Vacation" with Chevy Chase. Often, while I'm working on Christmas stockings, I'll put a Christmas movie on.

Bake Christmas cookies

I love to bake Christmas cookies, especially traditional ones that I only make during the holidays. I don't have the time that I used to, but sometimes I'll invite my daughters to come over and we have a Christmas Cookie Baking Marathon. Then, we divide the cookies between the three of us. There is nothing like a cup of tea and a cookie nestled with a book at the fireplace. Just thinking about it makes me excited for Christmas!

Shop for the perfect Christmas tree

There is nothing like a "real" pine tree for Christmas. It makes the house smell so good and when handled correctly really is a cinch to care for and clean up after the holidays are over. So, pack up the family and head to a tree lot for the perfect Christmas tree. Of course, the Christmas celebrations really start when you put up the tree and decorations. That really puts you in the Christmas spirit. Don't forget to put on some Christmas music!

Get crafty

There are so many fun Christmas craft ideas on Pinterest and other blogs. You could really go crazy making Christmas gifts and decorations. Make a list of the things you want to make this Christmas and head over to your nearest craft supply store. One year, my daughters and I had a get-together and we all made burlap Christmas wreaths. It was a lot of fun. Check out my Pinterest Board for DIY projects you can make for Christmas.

Visit Santa Claus

My grandchildren are just reaching the age when they might want to visit Santa Claus. Sometimes, Santa can be a little scary for some children. We will see if my Granddaughter, who is just turning 4 years old, will be okay with seeing Santa. In any case, it will be fun to go to the mall and see the ole guy and perhaps take a picture with him...

Drive around town to see the Christmas lights

Usually, right after Thanksgiving the Christmas lights start to appear around towns. It is always so much fun to see the different lighting adored all the houses. In our small town, the residents really go way out at Christmastime. The shops decorate their windows and the streets are lined with white lights and garland. My daughter lives in "town" and right across the street from a park. The trees are decorated with white lights and is so pretty.  Looking at the decorations really puts you in the Christmas mood for sure!

Take in a  Christmas production

I live in the Chicagoland area and just searching online, I discovered many Christmas shows all around the area.  Some are available in the smaller towns, so you don't have to travel to the City. Even high schools have Christmas productions. Check online in your area to see what's available. Some have afternoon shows, which makes it nice for the younger kids.

Black Friday shopping

Shopping on Black Friday, right after Thanksgiving, will definitely put you in the Christmas mood. The stores have up Christmas decorations and the hustle and bustle of Christmas shoppers makes you really think about the "countdown to Christmas!" These days, I've gotten a little "bah humbug" about shopping on Black Friday, because of the crowds.. But, when I was younger, I challenged the crowds and thought it was fun....  You can't miss the deals!  I wrote a post on my Ten Reasons to Shop for Christmas early.

Family Christmas photo

Get in the Christmas spirit and take your family Christmas photo now, so that it's ready when you order your Christmas photo cards. Getting the family together can be a challenge for me, since my kids are grown and have their own schedules. When we are together, during the year, it seems we forget to take a family picture. I guess now, I'll have to wait till Thanksgiving... For those of you that have the perfect picture, visit Shutterfly or Vista Print for your holiday cards. That will surely put you in the Christmas spirit, as they have wonderful holiday cards to choose from.  Go to my post for tips on How to Take the Perfect Family Christmas Photo
