Soft and Chewy Traditional Oatmeal Cookies

chewy oatmeal cookies

My Grandmother would make the most delicious oatmeal cookies.  Just about every time we visited,  she would bring them out for us with a glass of cold milk. She would make hers rather large and flat.  I remember them being soft and chewy, and sometimes she would warm them up in the oven.  Here is a recipe similar to the oatmeal cookies she made back in the 1960's.

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup water
1 tea vanilla

1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tea baking soda
1/2 tea cloves
1 tea cinnamon
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
2 cups quick-cooking oats

Heat oven to 350°. Mix thoroughly shortening, sugars, egg, water and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredients. Drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto greased baking sheet. Bake 12-15 minutes.  Don't over bake.  The sides will be brown and the center may not appear to be done, but when they cool it sets.  Makes 1- 2 dozen
